Sarah runs animation workshops in schools and privately. Students go through a creative process, the stories are often personal or mythic. They transform this into a storyboard which is then used as the basis for a 2D or 3D animation. Workshops within the school environment can be linked to the curriculum, whilst workshops both in and outside schools can also be purely creative processes drawing on cultural activities as well as Art.
In all contexts animation is a powerful way to teach group work skills and creative decision making.

Scrath animation involves drawing on or scratching the actual film stock rather than imprinting images via a photographic process. Free from narrative the animator can explore pure form and motion.

This animation by student Sarah Finch tells of a character Susie who is lost and is taken home by a colourful bird. Using cut-out paper figures, stop-motion animation is used. Focus on emotion and facial features are striking.

The story in this animation by student Rochelle Andrew, is of a boy playing on the beach who falls into a whale’s mouth and is then ejected onto the beach and reunited with his mother. The translucent quality of the the figures and background give the animation a real vibrancy and the use of “shadow puppetry” for the whale shows ingenuity in combining techniques (both involving light) in a single film.
